This idea of comparison and lack of joy falling into the same category is no new notion. We’ve been talking about this for years…but the problem with topics like this one, is that we know it to be true, but we do little about changing it.
So is comparison just innate and something we will all have to live with for the rest of our lives or is it really something we can overcome? And if so…how!!
I know one way of dealing with comparison and the insecurities that come with it, is growing up. The older you get the more at ease you become with your choices and somehow somewhere along the line, comparison doesn’t seem to hold as much weight in your life, as it once did. BUT…that doesn’t mean it’s eradicated completely.
The problem with dealing with issues like comparison is that we usually target the behavior rather than the cause of it, and that way we never really get over it. Comparison occurs in the absence of remembering & celebrating that you are unique. Comparison is a result of forgetfulness. You forget who you are, why you’re here and how incredibly awesome you really are! Or maybe you don’t forget, maybe it’s worse than that. Maybe you never knew.
In an attempt to overcome this somewhat natural tendency, I have come up with 3 self-affirmations that if repeated daily (yes, a real rewiring of your thoughts) may just give you the reassurance you needed to quit. Quit comparing!!
A quick word on what self-talk actually is. It’s the essence of who you are – it’s the language and lingo you listen to 80% of your day. It’s the way you speak to yourself & it’s the root of most of your thoughts, which feed your behaviour. Change it & you’ll change your life!!!
#1 – That thing about me that no one knows – it’s ok. I forgive me.
#2 – I am not behind, below or lacking in anything. I am exactly where I need to be right now!
#3 – It is not selfish to celebrate who I am. If I don’t, no one else will. I am proud to be who I am.
Repeat these three sentences to yourself every time you find yourself getting caught up in comparison. Remembering, that at some point you brainwashed yourself to believe that comparison was okay…it’s time to brainwash yourself that it’s NOT.
